Top Monthly Tune Recap – March 2020

Hi All!

What a month this has been. While most of it has been a boon (I want to get out just like you!), it’s actually been this music fan’s blessing in disguise hah. As a result of this quarantine period, I find myself with more time to discover a tune or two, and coolest of all, I’ve had unprecedented access to all these DJ/Musician livestreams. So there’s my little glimmer of hope for you all. And don’t worry, still got a track recap for you.

Part One

1. Matt Fax – Light On

Genre: House

Matt Fax is definitely no stranger to my countdowns. Because we’re under lockdown, this tune is perfect because it’s one of those tunes that make you feel like you’re flying far away at hyperspeed.

 

2. Young Pinch – Beach Ballin’ (feat. blackbear)

Genre: Hip Hop

Like the summer vibe of this tune. I really enjoy how it really walks through the mind – one minute you’re riding around enjoying your time to think, and then the next, you hit some real introspective talk.

 

3. Rootkit – Only Knew (ft. Nevve)

Genre: Dance

I love Nevve’s vocals in this tune.

 

4. Dustycloud – Never Stop

Genre: House

Dustycloud always has these neat background industrial / futuristic sounds incorporated in his tunes. If you’re looking for a harder hitting house track, this is it.

 

5. Tsunami – Fly Butta (Original Mix) (Insomniac/Discovery Project)

Genre: House

Oh how this tune makes me long for a drink by the beach, preferably in the Mediterranean. All kinds of chill vibes.

Tune Part Two

6. Ekali & Illenium – Hard To Say Goodbye Ft. Chloe Angelides (Win And Woo Remix)

Genre: Dance

So Win and Woo are definitely becoming one of my newest favorite musical groups. I loved watching them during the recent Digital Mirage festival stream. Get your dance on to this remix.

 

7. Aethon, Freddy Fat Cats – Enlil (Original Mix)

Genre: Techno

A tune on the dreamier or melodic side.

 

8. Big Gigantic featuring Felly – St. Lucia

Genre: Electronic

I’m such a sucker for Cali Vibes and guitar riffs. This tune has both!!

 

9. Ellie Goulding, blackbear – Worry About Me

Genre: Pop

I feel like it’s been a minute since I heard anything new from Ellie. I was sold from the minute I saw Blackbear on the track.

 

10. NGHTMRE & SLANDER – FEELING GUD FT. MATTHEW SANTOS

Genre: Dance

This is a cool re-do of a Nina Simone staple.

Top Monthly Tune Recap – January 2020

Welcome to 2020 folks. I remember thinking how far away 2020 seemed, and now it’s here. I want to thank all of you who visit this site and discover new tunes and artists. I look forward to continuing to post my top ten every month!

1. Mac Miller – Everybody

Genre: Hip Hop

Mac’s loss was a big one for the music community. With every release, he grew as an artist. This was my favorite tune off the posthumous album ‘Circles’.

 

2. H.E.R. – Sometimes

Genre: R&B

I absolutely fell in love with H.E.R. after seeing her perform on the Grammys. This is one of those tunes you come across at the exact moment you need to hear the message. The lyrics really resonated with me. Enjoy her soulful voice on this one.

 

3. elijah hill & rx Soul – 3 nights

Genre: Dance

I love the catchy chorus on this tune and the choppy electronic background bits.

 

4. TRAILS – Hold My Soul

Genre: Indie

I love the indie pop vibe on this tune.

 

5. Ali Bakgor – Gave My Heart

Genre: Deep House

The perfect midnight-on-the-dancefloor tune. Dark club vibes with the bass + synths.

 

Part Two

6. AMTRAC – Radical (Edit) [feat. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs]

Genre: Dance

The airy vocals and ambient background brings this tune to the top of my second-half of the countdown.

 

7. Joywave – Blank Slate

Genre: Alternative

While my countdowns skew mostly on the electronic side of things (house etc.), this month’s vibes really ran towards Indie/Alternative. I get a Killers-esque vibe from this tune.

 

8. DVBBS – GOMF (Tim Baresko remix)

Genre: House

If you’re looking for a tune that has a great intro build-up into a solid drop, this is it. You’ll be rewarded for your patience.

 

9. Vandelux – Live Forever

Genre: Dance

Surprisingly polished for a tune created by Vandelux in his closet. He takes ownership over the vocals and production.

 

10. Syence – Lies (feat. H. Kenneth)

Genre: Dance

Have you ever listened to a tune and instantly felt like a badass after? This would be that.

Best of 2019

Greetings Music Fans,

It’s been quite the ride in 2019. I for one am totally ready for 2020. 2019 brought about some solid dance tunes, but personally, I really loved all the great alternative music I’ve heard, especially from Jaymes Young who is featured twice on this list! Thank you for checking out my tune recaps each month I put them out, and for following along more frequently on thistune.rocks. I hope you discovered a new artist or two. Top Monthly Tune Recap – August 2019

Hi All! Back at it again with your August tune recap. Enjoy:

Part One

1. Jaymes Young – Happiest Year

Genre: Indie / Alternative

Jaymes’ voice gives me chills all the time. The lyrics to this tune are quite beautiful. Instead of going down a negative path, the song chooses to convey gratefulness for relationships since gone.

 

2. Sebastian Paul – So Done (ft. Phoebe Ryan)

Genre: Electronic

This tune is my break-repeat-button winner for the month. Contrasting my first pick which was all about choosing to be grateful and fondly looking back, this tune is about cutting the cord! The catchy beat and hook will keep you coming back.

 

3. THIEVES – Starting Over ft. Anthony Starble

Genre: Dubstep

I was hooked on this tune within the first 30 seconds. Love the vocals layered over the bass kicks.

 

4. Vincent – I’m No Magician (feat. Love, Alexa)

Genre: Electronic

This month’s tunes are heavy around vocals. Alexa’s soft, air-y qualities are beautiful. My favorite parts of this tune are around the choppiness first introduced around the 1:10 marker.

 

5. Popeska – I’ll Be Here

Genre: Electronic

With a minimal hook and a variety of sounds like wind chimes, this tunes rounds out the top 5.

 

Part Two

6. Benny Mayne – afraid of luv

Genre: R&B / Soul

The tagline of this tune got me right away, “inspired by a generation that’s fallen out of love…”. Benny’s vocals are perfectly designed for long drives when you want to contemplate life’s relationships.

 

7. Dosem – All Locations

Genre: Melodic House

Dosem can do no wrong. This melodic house tune is the background to your next dark basement party.

 

7. Ed Sheeran (feat. Skrillex) – Way To Break My Heart (Adam Pearce Remix)

Genre: Dance

Great dance remix of this Ed Sheeran tune.

 

9. Eli & Fur – Parfume (Dosem Remix)

Genre: Deep House

While this is an older tune, I recently discovered it through listening to Cycles Radio. Something about this remix reminds me of early house tracks I used to listen to.

 

10. Lizzo – Tempo (Ft. Missy Elliott)

Genre: Pop

This is the year of Lizzo. Also, Missy. Damn. Elliott. That is all.

1. Matt Fax – To The Ground

Genre: House

I’ve been a fan of Matt forever, and by forever, he’s extremely young so maybe not that long. Over the last few years, he’s developed a great ability to evoke emotions through his tracks. His later tracks feel much smoother and impactful.

 

2. Me & My Toothbrush – Just Release Me

Genre: House

I love the vocal intro to this solid house tune. Get ready to hit the repeat button.

 

3. Niko The Kid – Sorry Not Sorry Feat. Brayton Bowman

Genre: Nu-Disco

The type of tune when you’re feeling yourself and want a little extra pep in that step. As a result, I dare you not to walk with a little more swagger.

 

4. Sammy Deuce & Sebb Junior – Elevate The Groove

Genre: Indie Dance / Nu-Disco

In anticipation of summer (it’s been a long winter for NYers folks!), I’ve been tuning into feel good tunes. Another dance-worthy tune right here.

 

5. ilan Bluestone feat. EL Waves – Mama Africa (Extended Mix)

Genre: Trance

It’s been a while since I’ve heard a proper Trance tune I’d want to listen to over and over again. Ilan was able to masterfully weave in a global feel and solid lyrics.

6. Crooked Colours – Do It Like You (Mickey Kojak Remix)

Genre: Electronic

Solid remix of the original tune.

 

7. MERCER – Your Love (Original Mix)

Genre: Nu-Disco

As mentioned, in anticipation of Summer’s arrival, another kickin’ disco tune.

 

8. Serious (with Matthew Koma) (TWO LANES Remix)

Genre: Dance

Everything about this tune screams young love. If you’re longing to go down memory lane or just a young kid in love, here ya go.

I love the minimal vocal hook for this tune.

Slightly biased on this number one tune because I had the honor of watching Cristoph drop this track during his NYC set with Cirez D and everyone went crazy. The tension just past midway and subsequent release is breathtaking. Jem’s vocals are beautiful.

 

2. ODESZA – Falls (Golden Features Remix)

Genre: Electronic

Who doesn’t love a good Odesza remix? Golden Features hits a home run with this tune. Just the right amount of dark and choppiness.

 

3. Hayden James – Better Together (feat. Running Touch)

Genre: House/Electronic

Warm up your winter with this danceworthy tune.

 

4. Disclosure – Latch (Robin Tayger Remix)

Genre: Deep House

Ok, there’s a small possibility you’ve heard a few remixes of Latch, but I asking for you to take one more chance on this tune. I can’t stop dancing to this one.

 

5. SNBRN & Autograf – Move All Night feat. Kole

Genre: House

Another winter warmer tune.

6. Niko The Kid – Pray To You with Chris Lee

Genre: House

Really digging the solid house bassline of this tune.

 

7. GAB – Save My Life (Radio Edit)

Genre: Deep House

Another solid house tune with catchy minimal vocals. Get ready to listen to this one on a dance floor soon.

 

8. Crooked Colours – Do It Like You

Genre: Electronic

My favorite part of this tune is actually the first 30 seconds into the track. I love the funky strings leading into the vocals.

 

9. The Crystal Method – Holy Arp

Genre: Electronic

Yes folks, The Crystal Method has released a new album. It’s hard to explain exactly what I’m hearing in this tune, but then again, The Crystal Method isn’t meant to be explained, just enjoyed! Put the volume up on this one.

 

10. FWLR & David Spekter – Anyway

Genre: Electronic

Top Monthly Tune Recap – September 2018

1. George Kwali – Dream Enough

Genre: House

Repeat in full effect! Love Aplin’s vocals over Kwali’s synths and house beats.

 

2. Caio Monteiro & Wizzi – Undertow

Genre: Deep House

Love the simple chorus on this tune.

 

3. Callum McBride & Oliver Jack – Everywhere (feat. Sander Nijbroek)

Genre: Deep House

This month’s tune recap is strong on vocals. Sander’s voice is quite beautiful. Perfect for that mid-point in a late night set.

 

4. owl city – fireflies (it’s different cover)

Genre: Trap

It’s hard to believe Owl City’s original version came out 11 years ago! The cover by it’s different is a fresh spin featuring a new trap background.

 

5. Robert Delong & K.Flay – Favorite Color Is Blue (Win And Woo Remix)

Genre: Electronic

The original tune was already catchy but this remix amps up that factor even more.

 

Part Two

6. Kyle Watson – Sides [OUT NOW]

Genre: Tech House

This tune is part of a larger body of work called Into The Morning. While we don’t have the entire album to go on a musical journey with, this was one of my favorite tunes to vibe to.

 

7. CVBZ – 2 Gone

Genre: Pop

It’s hard to classify this style of tune since it drifts around multiple genres. Is it dance, is it pop, is it r&b, is it trap?? Who cares. It’a awesome and you should give it a listen.

 

8. Ontonic & Jetique – Far Away

Genre: Deep House

Would love to blast this dancing tune on a dark dancefloor.

 

9. Loud Luxury – Body (Tim Gunter Edit)

Genre: Dance

I’m glad Tim Gunter released this catchy remix to the masses.

 

10. Tinlicker – Dream With Somebody (Extended Mix)

Genre: Progressive House

A great tune to end my September recap. Enjoy this one straight from Armada.

Top Monthly Tune Recap – April 2018

Part One

1. Sem – TORN

Genre: Alternative

I may have broken the repeat button with this tune. Serious bass + synths + catchy hook make this my number one jam of the month. Props to you Sem.

 

2. Sonn – Choke

Genre: Ambient/Downtempo

Every so often I come across some masterful, emotional pieces of work. Choke by Sonn exhibits this completely. Sit back and explore the lovely piano snippets, gentle bass, and echo-y background vocals.

 

3. Two Feet – Quick Musical Doodles

Genre: Alternative

As a rule of thumb I tend to put more current/new tunes on my countdown, but once in a while I make an exception. Two Feet’s Quick Musical Doodles is absolutely the exception this month. I’m slightly annoyed I slept on Two Feet until now, but I’m thrilled to have discovered his music later rather than never!

 

4. Uknew – Loving You

Genre: Tech-House

Definitely the type of tune to get the night started. I imagine walking on to the dancefloor and feeling the urge to move as soon as the tune comes on.

 

5. Two Feet – Same Old Song (S.O.S. Part 1)

Genre: Alternative

I love Two Feet so much, he appears twice on my countdown. One of his signatures is his stellar guitar work. Happy listening.

 

Part Two

6. Matters (Matt Fax) – Epoch

Genre: House

It’s been a while since I listened to Matt Fax, but I recently discovered this tune under his alias ‘Matters’. Such a young talent. Enjoy.

 

7. Jax Jones – Instruction ft. Demi Lovato, Stefflon Don (DFUX Bootleg)

Genre: House

Solid dance tunes for the summer. I’m also partially biased to vocals from Demi Lovato.

 

8. Dan Farber – Always feat. Boy Matthews

Genre: Electronic

I love how this tune is dedicated to any cause/person worthy of a ‘ride-or-die’ mentality. Get ready for some emotional vocals.

 

9. Chris Lake – Turn Off The Lights ft. Alexis Roberts

Genre: House

In anticipating of summer, I’ve been listening to a lot of house tunes. I’m glad I came across this number from Chris Lake. Get ready to dance, hopefully with ‘the lights off’.

 

10. Mirco Caruso – Picasso (Original Mix) [2Drop Records]

Genre: Tech-House

Just in time for your Cinco de Mayo festivities, enjoy this bouncy dance tune.

What makes this tune is the stellar vocals from Able Heart.

 

2. DROELOE – Backbone ft Nevve


Genre: Electronic

A tune with another set of awesome vocals from Nevve. Love the message this tune relays to its’ listeners – get up and go do something.

 

3. Lost Frequencies – Send Her My Love (R.O Remix)


Genre: Dance

This tune is dedicated to all those who got away. I was in love with the original, but this remix is fantastic. Get ready to be both in deep thought, and head bob simultaneously.

 

4. Lauv – I Like Me Better (Hälder Remix)


Genre: Trap

I love this tune because I can visualize a complete story when I listen to it. Enjoy this awesome remix.

 

5. ZHU – Hometown Girl (Khamsin Remix)


Genre: Dance

ZHU’s tracks are amazing enough, so remixes are no easy task. Khamsin puts a beautifully chill spin on ‘Hometown Girl’. Get ready for some summer vibes.

 

6. Taska Black – Sandpaper (ft. Ayelle)


Genre: Electronic

This month is all about the vocals. Ayelle provides soothing vocals set up against an emotional backdrop.

 

7. Autograf – Smells Like Teen Spirit (ft. Queen Sessi)


Genre: Electronic

As a huge Nirvana fan, I was a bit hesitant to check this tune out. I’m glad I did. It’s a lovely (and much more subdued) take on the original. Kudos Autograf.

 

8. Marc Goone – rewind (prod. judge)


Genre: Hip-Hop

Continuing with the vocal theme this month, enter Marc Goone. Rewind is a solid musical introspection on the past.

 

9. A Different Way (Noizu Remix) [feat. Lauv]


Genre: Dance

Heading to the end of this month’s countdown, I wanted to add something a little less heavy. This is a great remix of one of the biggest tunes of last year.

 

10. Tchami – World To Me (feat. Luke James)(MK Remix)


Genre: House

With all the 90s nostaglia floating around, I get that kind of vibe with this track.
